For 20 year old Joanna Brown has recently returned from a visit to South America where she competed in her first ever Rugby 7’s tournament.

The rugby union fan can usually be spotted at Glossop Rugby Club, embroiled in feisty encounters against other girls her age.

After being introduced to the sport at a young age by her father David, Joanna was gripped, and with the support of Jane Owen and Soy Modelly, she pathed a way to elite success.

Despite representing England at Under 20 level, the Teeside University student was invited to play for Great Britain during the England recess.

The journey to Brazil began full of promise, with the Great Britain squad harbouring some outstanding future talent.

The competition ensued on the August 8, taking in six games over three consecutive days. Brutal encounters between a number of countries had spectators on their feet and the fast paced nature of the game had Joanna spellbound.

Speaking to Reporter Sport about the tournament, the 20 year old detailed her pride in taking part and glorified the fast paced nature of the game. She said “It’s a much shorter and really fast paced game and the tactics are really different to the rugby I usually play.

“I’m accustomed to being part of a 26 man squad, but with rugby sevens it’s much more compact, resulting in a closer experience.”

The communal spirit between the tight knit squad worked wonders in Brazil, with terrific results ensuring a fourth place finish.

Despite not finishing first, the trip proved to be an immeasurable experience for Joanna and laid the foundations for a future of success. She added “It was a great honour to play for Great Britain as very few people own a GB shirt, especially as it was my first ever 7s international! Playing in Brazil was a fantastic bonus. It was an amazing end to my 2013/14 season.”
