A Glossop brother and sister have been ramping up their training schedule to five nights a week – plus daily morning and weekend running and exercise sessions.

It is all in preparation to take on the best at the World Karate and Kickboxing Championships in Dublin.

Seventeen-year-old Megan Smith and Nathan, 12, hope their dreams of becoming world champion kickboxers become a reality when they fly out with fellow Evolution club members, Madison Buxton, seven, and Heather Wheal, 22, in the next few days.

The Glossop-based kickboxing club has rapidly grown in numbers and recently had to move to larger premises to accommodate the local demand for coaching from multi-award-winning world champion Sensei Kelly Buxton, a fourth Dan blackbelt.

Megan and Nathan wouldn’t have been able to compete had they not secured the generous sponsorship from HFL Building solutions earlier in the year.

It ensured they will be able to fly out, compete and also be accommodated at the week long competition.

A grateful Megan said: “Having sponsorship means the world to us.

“Kickboxing is an expensive sport and the generosity of sponsors means we can continue to train hard, attend tournaments and hopefully  become world champions.”

Sponsorship and support also came in a very practical way too from Glossop Screen Print based in the market hall.

While collecting their sponsors printed clothes from the shop,  the pair’s mum Jane joked with owner Paul Pennington about her never-ending washing pile of ‘sweaty t-shirts’ due to all the extra training.

Paul immediately printed off a pile of smart branded training t-shirts for each of them free of charge to help out.

“I have been overwhelmed by Paul’s generosity,” said Jane.

“It’s wonderful that small local businesses such as Paul’s can get behind their own and show their support in different ways.

“The t-shirts will be taken to the World Championships and after the competition a couple of them will be traded with competitors from around the globe so the name Glossop Screenprint will potentially be flying the flag for our town in training gyms in countries around the world.”

Paul said: “I’m pleased to have been able to help out and wish Megan and Nathan every success in the competition and hope they bring back gold for Glossop!”

Another local business owner, Gareth Wilson from GK Wilson Landscapes, has also got involved by sponsoring Madison Buxton, one of the youngest fighters on the England team.

“Madison is a very promising young fighter,” said Gareth.

“We hope our sponsorship means she can chase her dream of becoming a world champion at the age of just seven.”
