Glossop North End edged local rivals Mossley 3-2 in a wind battered Boxing Day clash at Surrey Street.

Glossop started with a disadvantage from the challenging head winds, which presented some early chances to the away side.

However, it was the home side that would take the lead on 14 minutes, after Max Leonard converted a square pass from Glossop striker Mike Norton.

Opening goal: Leonard stroked home Norton’s lay-off from inside the box to get the Hillmen off to a flying start

Glossop then weathered the remainder of the first half and defended their lead well.

The start of the second half saw Glossop in full control, but a break by Mossley saw Tom Pratt brought down in the penalty area after a clumsy challenge from Glossop’s Mo Ali.

Mossley’s Mike Fish battered in the spot kick to level the score on the 50 minute mark with his 18th goal of the season.

Leonard responded immediately with his second goal of the game; a fine looping header on 52 minutes.

Off the head: Leonard scored from close range for his 14th goal of the season to give Glossop a two-goal cushion

With the wind now behind them, Glossop sailed away with a 3-1 lead after Ben Richardson converted a scrappy goal from close range.

The next 30 minutes then saw end-to-end play from both teams.

The Hillmen were then disappointed after Dougie Carroll tucked in a superb low cross in the dying embers of the game to make it 3-2.

Glossop then had to show their mettle to preserve their lead in a nervy final few minutes.

A well-deserved win from the Hillmen sees them storm up to third in the league ahead of Thursday’s trip to fourth-placed Trafford, while visitors Mossley are now left drifting towards the relegation zone in 17th place.
