St Philip Howard engineering careers for the future

A group of Glossop students will compete against some of the best in Britain in a contest to discover the engineers of the future.

A team from St Philip Howard Catholic Academy has been selected to compete in the UK finals of the Tomorrow’s Engineers EEP Robotics Challenge.

As a winner in the first of three heats held at Preston iSTEM College, they will now go head-to-head with teams from across the country at The Big Bang Fair on Friday, March 17, at the NEC in Birmingham.

The winning team of 10 built, programmed and controlled LEGO robots for a series of ‘space missions’.

They also had to research, design, plan and present their own solution to a contemporary scientific problem – developed by LEGO Education with NASA.

The Tomorrow’s Engineers EEP Robotics Challenge introduces student teams to real-world engineering, technology, robotics and computing challenges.

The challenge aims to help students put their school learning into context and discover exciting new careers.

Mrs Nicola Dewey, head of computer science, said: “Taking part in the Robotics Challenge has been really exciting and we can’t wait to get to the final.

“The students worked well as a team learning a lot about engineering in robotics and particularly enjoyed seeing all our hard work pay off.”

The students in the ‘Howard I do that’ team were Shania Campbell, Emma Myatt, Meghan Price-Lee, Emma Coffey, Adam Statham, Dylan Bray, Dan Pickford, Aidan Graham, Frederik Leonhardsen and Adam Lewis.

Research from EngineeringUK, which runs the Tomorrow’s Engineers EEP Robotics Challenge, shows that communicating engineering careers to young people is vital for the future of the British economy.

Paul Jackson, chief executive of EngineeringUK, said: “In order to meet the country’s demand for engineers, we need to double the number of graduates and apprentices entering the engineering industry.

“Programmes such as the Tomorrow’s Engineers EEP Robotics Challenge aim to help young people from all backgrounds understand the variety, excitement and opportunity presented by a career in engineering.”

Head teacher Louisa Morris said: “It is really important within SPH to be positively promoting engineering skills with the students and I am particularly pleased there is a cross-section of both girls and boys succeeding in this curriculum area at a national level. Well done, we are all really proud of you.”
