Vandals have damaged the site where a new football centre is being built in Tintwistle.

Tintwistle Athletic say someone has taken a spade and dug deep holes randomly all over the main pitch and completely removed the turf and soil from the corner flag area of their new £430,000 centre on West Drive, which is due to officially open in the summer.

It is believed to have occurred sometime between 1pm and 8pm last Sunday, April 23.

Club secretary Jill Crossland told the Chronicle: “We had a junior Under 12 match on the pitch until 12 noon and there was someone on the ground until about 1pm. We also had workers in our new changing rooms as well.”

Holes: Some of the damage to one of the pitches

She added that the club are ‘greatly disappointed’ about the ‘sabotage’ incident and the police have been informed.

“About two weeks ago, we also had damage to one of the JCB’s on site working on the other pitch. This is not normal for this area and the local police have been informed, who will be patrolling the area.

“We have installed 24-hour CCTV at the site which will be operational very shortly, however, it is the help of local neighbours and dog walkers we are asking for, to report anyone they see looking suspicious to help the club by immediately contacting the police.

“Over Easter, we held a really successful soccer school at the site – keeping youngsters occupied – and whoever has done the damage clearly has a grudge against either football, trying to stop them playing, or against the works being done – £500,000 of external funding to the area which isn’t costing the council a penny.”

Tintwistle Athletic provide football for approximately 300 players and over 40 volunteers every week.
