Glossop North End will be hoping to build on their winning start to the 2017-18 season when they welcome Clitheroe to Surrey Street on Tuesday night.

The Hillmen got off to a flyer on Saturday with a 3-0 win at Goole, courtesy of goals from Ben Deegan, Dale Johnson and Jude Oyibo, in their first competitive game under new joint-managers Paul Phillips and Steve Halford.

But Glossop will know a tougher assignment lies ahead in their first home match of the new campaign against a Clitheroe side who are also expected to challenge for promotion in the Evo-Stik First Division North this term.

The Lancashire outfit also began the season on a winning note with a 2-0 victory over Glossop’s local rivals Droylsden at Shawbridge last weekend, as forwards Sefton Gonzales and Kurt Willoughby struck in each half.

Glossop enjoyed success against Clitheroe last term, doing the double over the Blues in the league – but only after plenty of late drama.

The Hillmen netted twice late on to come from behind to win 3-2 away from home in an explosive five-goal thriller on Bonfire Night, before notching in the 86th minute to steal a 1-0 victory at Surrey Street in March.

But last season would ultimately end in disappointment for both sides as Glossop failed to repeat the feat of reaching the play-offs in their second successive campaign in the ninth tier of English football, finishing eighth.

While Clitheroe have finished seventh in the last two seasons and ended up just two points outside the top five in Simon Haworth’s first season at the helm in 2016/17 after another promising year which again only faltered in the latter weeks of the campaign.

Both sides will be keen to make up for it this year and look to maintain their 100 per cent record to cement a place in the top five, even at this very early stage of the season.

They may also have one eye on their upcoming Emirates FA Cup Preliminary Round ties at the weekend – with Glossop playing host to fellow First Division North outfit Mossley in an eagerly awaited derby on Saturday, while Clitheroe travel to Pickering Town of the Northern Counties East League Premier Division on Sunday.
