Adults with learning difficulties will have an opportunity to enjoy the Glossop nightlife just before Christmas.

After the success of the events in April and August, Glossop-based Life You Choose are holding a third club night on Monday, December 11.

It will take place from 7pm to 10pm at Club HQ on High Street East.

The not-for-profit arts and multimedia group plan to hold the free social evenings every three months and the latest comes after an increased turnout at the summer event – with around 100 people enjoying the unique experience of a nightclub.

Explaining the concept, Nicola Worswick – who is a director of Life You Choose Community Interest Company along with Kenneth Smith – said the club nights are one of many projects aimed at improving the quality of life for adults with learning difficulties.

She said: “Music, movie-making and cinematography, drama, art and design, live performances and community based social events are some of the projects we have successfully completed so far. Basically, we offer our members the unique opportunity to meet and surpass their aspirations.”

The inspiration behind the club project came from one of the group’s members, Matt Berry, who has ambitions to become a DJ and has put his skills to the test by being behind the decks for the first two nights at Club HQ to provide a variety of music.

Nicola added: “He really enjoys music and has a huge collection on some of his electronic devices. As he has the ability to operate such modern devices, we realised we could provide training and teach him how to operate the latest DJ equipment used today.

“Ken trained Matt in both the hardware and the software used by modern DJs in nightclubs. He learned about mixing, effects and entertaining your audience. It took around three weeks before Matt felt ready.

“He created his set list and organised it to create a good flow and atmosphere. He tested his ‘set’ out on the other members of Life You Choose and the feedback was very encouraging for him.”

The club nights were made possible thanks to Club HQ owner James Booth, who kindly agreed to let Life You Choose have exclusive access of the venue for free, and have proved a huge hit with members.

Nicola said: “All our members were very excited about this project and supported it fully, handing out tickets to their friends and family, sticking up posters, and spreading the word everywhere. There was a real buzz building.

“The club nights provide an environment that is less intimidating for a person with a learning difficulty, especially for the many that had never experienced a real nightclub before.

“Because the venue was provided to us for free we could hand out tickets that allowed entry for free. We aim to do this every time, the only thing you need money for is your drinks.

“After the last event, the feedback from clubbers, guests and carers was very positive. One parent described
our event as ‘forward thinking’ ‘unique’ and ‘modern’.”

Club owner James Booth also commented: “We are very proud to be asked to help facilitate an incredibly
worthwhile concept, with such an admirable organisation as Life You Choose, and look
forward to collaborating on many more events in the future.”
