New Mills AFC returned to winning ways in the Hallmark Security League First Division with a crucial 2-0 victory at Cheadle Town on Saturday afternoon.

The Millers secured a first win in five games in all competitions thanks to second-half goals from recent signings Jack McConnell and Ed Driver.

It was a fully deserved three points and joint-managers Gareth Cross and Nick Dowse will also be delighted with a strong performance, which helped to earn a first clean sheet for the club since August.

The High Peak side were making a first trip to Cheadle’s Park Road Stadium since the 2007-08 season for an important contest between two teams adjacent in mid-table.

For their third game of the week, New Mills made several changes from Thursday night’s 5-3 defeat at Abbey Hey in a Macron Cup tie finally completed at the sixth attempt following a series of postponements.

Dennis Sherriff – who scored a hat-trick against Abbey Hey to become the club’s top scorer this season with 13 goals – was suspended after his red card against Alfreton Town in the Derbyshire Senior Cup but Nathan Neequaye was passed fit to start against his former club.

While Daniel Havern made his debut in goal and McConnell, Sam Marshall and Bobby Lofthouse all returned to the starting line-up.

It was a largely scrappy first-half from both teams, with Cheadle having the better of the few clear-cut chances that were created.

Rick Whyatt saw a weak side-footed effort easily cleared off the goalline and fired wide from inside the box, while Millers keeper Havern made a fine save to deny Adam Gardiner from close range.

But the visitors, inspired by man of the match Marshall, increased the tempo after the break and went ahead on the hour mark when McConnell got on the end of a low ball across the face of goal to tuck home his first goal for the club.

Cheadle created some decent opportunities but New Mills, who worked their socks off throughout, were more efficient and wrapped up the win in injury-time through a fine finish from Driver – a half-time substitute for David Dunn – as he tapped in at the back post from a drilled cross.

It was a glorious afternoon all around for the Millers – who were victorious in chilly conditions in Stockport and, in the process, leapfrogged a talented Cheadle side into 15th place.

They will be hoping to make it back-to-back wins next Saturday when they make the trip to Lancashire to take on an Atherton LR side who sit just two points and two places above them in the table.
