Glossop Mountain Rescue Team has paid tribute to a popular young member who passed away just days after taking part in its annual Santa collections.

The death of Tom Doldon (pictured) on Sunday, December 17, has devastated his family and friends, many of them from the closely knit GMRT.

The 33-year-old, from Norfolk Street in Glossop, has been involved with the team since September and was on a training programme to become a full on-call team member.

Team press officer Peter Jozefczyk said: “Tom took part in all our Santa collections at Christmas and also the teddy bear zip-wire event in Glossop Parish Church.”

A statement from the team said: “It is with great sadness the team has to announce the untimely death of trainee team member Tom Doldon.

“Tom was a keen trainee and helped out at all our fundraising events. Tom will be missed by the team. Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with his family and friends.”

Long-serving team member Graeme Shaw had been mentoring Tom on his progression to be a fully fledged rescuer since September and soon realised he had potential.

Graeme, who was involved in Tom’s training, said: “I was very impressed. He was a superb mountaineer as well as being a fantastic person.

“Tom also had a fantastic knowledge of the local hills – he showed great commitment for the training programme and came to every training event. He was very enthusiastic.

“He liked to be totally involved in everything, even volunteering to be a casualty for the regional medical exam.”

Mountain rescue team members described Tom as being ‘caring and considerate’, ‘tremendously kind’ and ‘someone who put others before himself’.

Graeme remembers Tom’s beaming smile in Norfolk Square on December 16 as children waited to see the team’s Father Christmas.

“He commented that he was really happy,” said Graeme. “We were devastated by his death.”

Tom was the much loved son of John and Linda and loving brother to Joe.

He loved the outdoors and helped the Moors for the Future team plant sphagnum moss on Bleaklow and other local hills.

Tom’s funeral service is at 2pm today (Thursday) at Glossop Parish Church, with a private family service taking place at Dukinfield Crematorium at 3:30pm on Friday.

There will be family flowers only, with donations received for Glossop Mountain Rescue Team and Shelter.

Glossop Carriage Company are carrying out the arrangements.
