Two fire crews were called into action in Mottram this afternoon (9 January) after a van burst into flames on a narrow country lane.

A van with an aerial work platform was on it’s way to repair streetlights when smoke began to escape from under the bonnet. One of the passengers got out to check when the entire vehicle burst into flames. Rob Moore and Darren Goddard, who were riding in the van at the time, said they were “lucky to be alive.”

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue service confirmed that they were called to Rabbit Lane at 1:05pm on 9 January. 2 crews from Hyde and Stalybridge were required to fight the fire, which gutted the van.

Crews were in attendance for over two hours in total, with narrow lanes and unpaved roads making access tricky. They used 3 sets of breathing apparatus, 2 hose reels, a power saw and lighting to fully extinguish the blaze.

Crews found manoeuvring difficult due to the narrow roads.

Crews used water from the nearby Mottram Hall to help fight the fire.

The van, a IVECO Daily was on hire from Peter Douglas Platforms for the purposes of repairing street lights.

Thankfully all occupants escaped unhurt.
