Glossop North End 1-3 Ramsbottom United

Glossop ended their third season in the Evo-Stik First Division North with a 3-1 defeat to Ramsbottom United at Surrey Street.

Despite taking the lead in the second minute through Andy Bishop, Glossop were made to taste their fifth successive loss thanks to second half efforts from Sam Madeley and a Jerome Wright double.

Defeat means Glossop have ended the season in 11th spot and 13 points outside the playoffs.

Following the game, the club confirmed the full-time appointments of interim managers Mark Canning and Andy Bishop, who took control of the first team at the beginning of March following Paul Phillips and Steve Halford’s departure to Buxton.

Bishop takes the job on a full-time basis having previously enjoyed a fruitful career in the Football League with Bury amongst others, where he scored 69 goals in 236 appearances during a seven year spell at Gigg Lane.

Upon taking the job on a temporary basis after the 3-1 victory over bottom club Goole, the duo inherited a squad that had been flirting with the playoffs throughout the campaign. Canning and Bishop suffered a baptism of fire during their first game in charge when leaders South Shields, who have subsequently claimed the title, stomped to a 3-1 victory at Surrey Street. Hopes of reaching the playoffs were soon revived with three draws and two victories, but a slump in form followed and the club fell to five consecutive defeats.

A disappointing end to the season, but Canning and Bishop will have the chance to stamp their authority over the summer months with a blank canvas at Surrey Street.

The club also held its End of Season Awards Night following the game. Kane Hickman was voted as the Players’ Player, while Courtney Meppel-Walter scooped the Managers’ and Supporters’ Player of the Season Awards.
