Weekend Review Greater Manchester Cricket League

It could hardly have been a better weekend for cricket as the sun shone.  Across the Oldham and Saddleworth areas it saw 6 wins and 9 defeats in League games for the 15 clubs in the Oldham Reporter circulation area.  There was also action on Sunday as the Premier and First Division teams competed in the 1st round of the Derek Kay Cup, which produced a mixed bag of results.

Premier Division

After a great win on the opening day Woodhouses lost their second game, and sadly it was more of the same as they visited Heywood.  Woodhouses got off to a great start, reaching 86-0.  Matty Taylor, (73), led the way.   However, they finished on 176-9 and this was no match for Heywood, who cruised home by 8 wickets.

Greenmount are the only side with a 100% record after 3 games, closely followed by 5 sides with 2 wins.

Division 1A

In Division 1A Denton fell by 24 runs in a relatively high scoring game at Heyside.  Chasing the home side’s 227-8, (Ryan Barnes – 67), the visitors put up a decent fight, pro Cloete Buitendag getting 80, and finished on 203ao.   Greenfield had a comprehensive win at Stretford, dismissing the opposition for 90, (Brad Woolley, 4-30).  The target was hardly a challenge as they lost only 1 wicket.

It was an equally comprehensive win for Royton.  Their total of 299-5 was founded on centuries by both pro Chirag Khurana, (132*) and Ryan Carruthers, (100).  Having toiled in the sun, shell shocked Astley & Tyldesley made only 42 in reply, Renaldo Holder picked up 6-13 for Royton who won by a massive 257 runs.

Greenfield and Flowery Field lead the way with 3 wins each.  The Lad Hill lane side top the table courtesy of an additional bonus point.

Division 1B

Moorside looked to be well set for a win at Stand.  Chasing the home side’s 173-9 they got to 132-3 with 13 overs left, and then 151-4 with 6 left but the last 6 wickets fell for 8 runs leaving them losers by 14 runs.  Saddleworth managed what was only a par score of 146 at Unsworth, but raced to the win, dismissing Unsworth for 58.  Stephen Howard, (5-28) led the way, aided by pro Kashif Naveed, (4-12) who had also top scored with 38 in the Saddleworth innings.   Glodwick, (146ao), overcame Monton, (96ao), largely thanks to an 9th wicket partnership of 45 between Gustav Prinsloo and Imran Asghar, which boosted them from 86-8

Saddleworth top the division but Dukinfield, without a game, are hot on their heels with 2 wins from their only fixtures so far.

Division 2A

Shaw came into the game against Glossop 2nd XI with a 100% record, but fell to defeat, falling 10 short of the home team’s total of 160.  Werneth’s innings lasted only 24 overs against Westleigh, and their total of 80, (Callum Porteous top scoring with 30), looked unlikely to trouble the home team.  In a flurry of hitting and wickets Westleigh passed the finishing line in 13 overs but for the loss of 6 wickets.

Elton now lead the way in the table with a 100% record.

Division 2B

In a division with 5 local clubs only Uppermill got a win.  They put up a sizeable total of 267-6, thanks to pro Ayaz Tazawar, (109).  Visitors South West Manchester fell well short on 157, with James Baron leading the way with 4-56.  Austerlands went down by 20 runs, chasing Edenfield’s 199-9, and Hollinwood, beset by location problems, were no match for Wythenshawe, going down by 8 wickets after totalling a paltry 89.  Overseas amateur Jamie King had a good day personally although his team Friarmere went down to Bolton Deane & Derby.  He took 5-51 and then with Friarmere faltering in their pursuit of 150, came in at 74-6.  His 33 got Friarmere within 15 runs of winning. Oldham went down to Whalley Range 2nd XI.  Rashid Hussain’s team fell to 44-6, but recovered to 168ao, helped by a 7th wicket partnership of 72 between Naeem and Tariq.  The visitors lost 6 wickets in reaching the target.

Uppermill top the table, but in what is looking to be a well balanced division no side has a 100% record after 3 games

Division 5 South and East

Springhead fell to Stayley 2nd XI, having totalled 176-7, (Joe Rawlinson 54).  Stayley won by 6 wickets and Springhead have now won 1 and lost 2 of their opening three games..

Derek Kay Perfit Cup

Sides in the Premier and First Divisions were in Cup action on Sunday.  The leaders of the Premier Division and Division 1A met.  The result went with the form book as Greenmount beat Greenfield by 5 wickets.  There were wins for Glodwick, (beating Stand by 50 runs), and Royton, who thrashed Denton by 9 wickets.  Elsewhere dreams of silverware are over for Saddleworth, (beaten by Prestwich), Moorside, (where Heywood won relatively easily), and Heyside who managed only 92ao at Roe Green.  Over at Clifton, the home side posted a mammoth 277-2.  As on the previous day Woodhouses started well with a century partnership, but subsided to 181ao.
