Families were out in force for the official opening of Derbyshire County Council’s impressive £2m Glossop Library.

It was a chance to have a look around the two-storey building packed with modern features and an opportunity for youngsters to meet BBC Children’s Television presenter Ben Cajee.

The CBeebies celebrity met families and read stories to the children.

Council chairman Cllr George Wharmby presided over the ceremony, along with his wife, Cabinet Member for Adult Care, Cllr Jean Wharmby.

He said: “This new building has transformed our idea of what a library can be.

“A lot of thought has gone into it, with areas for children, teenagers, study areas and new computers and it is bright and airy. Thanks to all the staff who have worked so hard to make it happen.”

Cllr Jean Wharmby was also impressed, saying: “This will be the focal point for the whole community. A new library in Glossop demonstrates the county council’s commitment to a strong library service.”

The new library, in Talbot Street, is attached to and located partly within the county council’s adult education building.

The existing entrance and reception will be used by both the library and the adult education service.

It replaces the town’s former library in Victoria Hall, which closed in April.

Ben appreciated the warm welcome he was given, saying: “It was a treat to be invited to Glossop library and to spend time with children and families. We played games, read stories and even made up our own story.

“The library looks amazing and I’m sure it will be well loved.”
