Clubbing together in Whitfield

A Glossop community organisation is looking for more donations so it can double the size of its Food Club.

‘Membership’ currently stands at 25, but the People of Whitfield group which runs it would like to cater for at least 50.

Group chairman Stuart Coles knows the demand is there, but the trouble is meeting it.

He said: “We have been running it (the club) for three months now. We have the money for 25 to 30 people and we hope to go to 50. We are applying for grants and would welcome any donations.”

The group would also love more non-frozen food and would also like frozen and perishable food to pack into its biggest ‘donation’ so far – a £1,000 fridge given by Blackburn wholesalers Pentland.

Stuart said: “We just sent them a letter and they brought one, we are very grateful.”

The club meets every Friday at Pure Vibes on Ebenezer Street, with members able to pick up food between 2pm and 4pm.

The club buys much of its food from a charity at knock-down prices using grants. It’s currently chasing more funding to increase the number of people the club can help.

However, thanks to a referral arrangement, a foodbank can supply food in an emergency, so no-one goes hungry.

The club however is more than simply a supply distribution base.

People can call in to receive benefit and housing advice and other advice and information to get employment, due to a team of advocates. There’s also a ‘Fun Friday’ session where  children can play pool, table tennis and badminton from 4-5pm among other activities, although youngsters must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Stuart and the rest of his team  would love to get some individual or business, to sponsor the club.

Anyone interested, or who would like to donate money or food, can call him on 0747 4476970.
