Tarelton 19-32 Glossop

After a tough home win last week, Glossop were faced with a trip to face a Tarleton team who held the impressive record of being the only team to defeat league leaders Altrincham Kersal so far this season.

Despite a comfortable win in the reverse fixture in November, the Hillmen were aware that their Lancastrian opposition would be a different challenge on home turf.

A strong wind blew straight downfield, and after winning the toss, Glossop opted to play the first half against the elements.

An early penalty for a high tackle was missed by Tarleton, and soon after Glossop opened the scoring when Damien Chabas carried well and passed out of the tackle to the supporting Joe Dearnaley who crashed over close to the posts. Matt Sonczak added the conversion.

Next to score was scrum half Chris Sonczak, who got the ball on half way and left the home defence for dead, before outpacing the full back for a fantastic solo try. Matt Sonczak was again on target with the conversion to stretch the lead to 0-14. From here, the home team responded well, and put Glossop under pressure for a sustained period. The strong wind meant that the Hillmen struggled to exit their own half, and a number of penalties were kicked to the corner by Tarleton, who finally got a try from a line out five metres from the Glossop line, with the conversion halving the Blues’ lead 7-14.

With half time approaching, Tarleton put themselves within touching distance with another try. A poor pass in midfield bounced along the ground and wrong footed the Glossop defence, allowing Tarleton to collect and score out wide.

The conversion attempt was wide, meaning that Glossop would go into the second half with a slender two point lead. The second forty minutes saw Glossop control the game more than they had in the first half, and the half back pairing of Chris and Matt Sonczak managed the game well, keeping Tarleton pinned in their own half for long periods. Glossop went on to score two further tries to secure the bonus point, courtesy first of the impressive Matt Sonczak and then Greg Moran. A break from half way by the home team was well finished to again reduce the deficit, but two penalties from Matt Sonczak put the game to bed.

The final score was 19-32, and Glossop have now taken maximum points from their last five matches, securing an impressive third place in the league table, whilst firmly knocking on the door of second place.

A huge game this weekend (9th March), when league leaders Altrincham Kersal visit Hargate Hill for 3:00 pm KO.

Following promotion last season, it has been a tough season for Glossop’s 2nd XV, who sit third from bottom in the league. However, they had their best result of the season when Fylde visited on Saturday, a brilliant team performance saw them dominate in a 61-12 victory.

Unfortunately, the 3rd XV could not make it a clean sweep for the senior teams. They struggled against a strong Sefton 2nd team who ran out 56-19 winners.
